Science Is More Than Memorising Answers
When many parents think about Primary Science, they often think about:
Memorising keywords
Completing worksheets
Practising exam questions
Preparing for assessments
But great science learning starts much earlier.
Before children can answer higher-order questions or score well in examinations, they need to develop something even more important:
Curiosity.
At Seashell Academy, we believe science should not simply be learned.
Science should be experienced.
That is exactly why we organised our Science Discovery Challenge 2026, where children became young scientists for a day through hands-on experiments and real-world discoveries.
A Science Open House Filled with "WOW" Moments
Throughout the event, our young scientists explored different science stations designed to spark curiosity and encourage investigation.
From erupting volcanoes to growing plants and creating static electricity, every activity gave children an opportunity to ask questions, make predictions, and discover how science works in everyday life.
A
nd most importantly—they were having fun while learning.
Experiment 1: Exploding Volcanoes 🌋
One of the most popular stations was our volcano experiment.
Children mixed different substances and watched their volcanoes erupt dramatically.
There were screams, laughter, and lots of excitement.
But beyond the fun, students were actually learning important scientific concepts:
✅ Chemical reactions
✅ Observation skills
✅ Cause and effect relationships
✅ Recording changes and results
Science suddenly became something they could see and experience.
Experiment 2: Planting Green Beans 🌱
At another station, children planted their own green bean seeds.
It may seem simple, but this activity introduced students to important Primary Science concepts:
✅ Living things and their needs
✅ Conditions for seed germination
✅ Observation and recording skills
✅ Understanding growth and change over time
Many students became excited about taking their plants home and observing them every day.
Because when children grow something with their own hands, science becomes meaningful.
Experiment 3: Static Electricity Magic ⚡
How can a balloon make your hair stand up?
Why do small pieces of paper move toward certain objects?
Through our static electricity experiment, students explored these questions themselves.
They learned:
✅ Scientific inquiry
✅ Asking questions
✅ Testing ideas
✅ Making predictions
✅ Connecting science to everyday experiences
Instead of memorising facts, they experienced science firsthand.
Experiment 4: Dry Ice Discovery ❄️
The dry ice station quickly became another favourite.
Children watched mysterious clouds appear and disappear right before their eyes.
This experiment encouraged students to:
✅ Observe carefully
✅ Describe changes accurately
✅ Ask "why" questions
✅ Think like scientists
Moments like these are powerful because they remind children that science is everywhere.
More Than Just Fun: Building Scientific Thinking
At Seashell Academy, every activity is intentionally designed around skills that children need both inside and outside the classroom.
During the Science Discovery Challenge, students practised:
🔍 Observing carefully
❓ Asking meaningful questions
🧪 Testing ideas
📝 Recording findings
🧠 Thinking critically
These are the same scientific inquiry skills assessed in Singapore's MOE Science curriculum and later tested in Primary Science examinations.
Why Hands-On Science Matters
Research consistently shows that children learn more effectively when they actively participate in the learning process.
Hands-on science activities help children:
Develop curiosity
Children become naturally interested in asking "Why?"
Build confidence
Students realise that science is something they can understand and explore.
Improve retention
Experiencing concepts often leads to deeper understanding than memorisation alone.
Strengthen problem-solving skills
Students learn how to investigate, observe, and think logically.
Most importantly, they begin to enjoy learning.
And children who enjoy learning often perform better academically over time.
At Seashell Academy, Science Comes Alive
Our goal is not simply to prepare children for examinations.
Our goal is to help children:
❤️ Stay curious
❤️ Build confidence
❤️ Develop scientific thinking
❤️ Discover how the world works
Because Science is not about memorising answers.
It is about learning how to ask questions, investigate ideas, and understand the world around us.
And when children experience those magical "WOW" moments—
they do not just learn Science.
They fall in love with learning.
