Should Parents Correct Every Mistake?

As the PSLE Oral Examination approaches, many parents become their child's practice partner.

Every evening, they read passages together, discuss pictures and ask oral questions.

But almost every parent eventually asks the same question:

"Should I correct every mistake my child makes?"

The answer may surprise you.

Not always.

In fact, correcting every pronunciation mistake, grammar error or sentence immediately can sometimes make children less confident, not more confident.

Let's explore why—and how parents can support oral practice more effectively.

What Is the Goal of PSLE Oral Practice?

Many parents think the goal is to help children give the "perfect answer."

However, the PSLE Oral Examination isn't about perfection.

Examiners assess whether students can:

  • communicate clearly

  • organise ideas logically

  • explain opinions

  • respond naturally

  • speak with confidence

Children who feel relaxed often communicate better than children who are constantly worried about making mistakes.

Why Correcting Every Mistake Can Be Harmful

Imagine this conversation:

Child:

"I think recycling is good because..."

Parent:

"Wait. Your pronunciation wasn't correct."

The child starts again.

A few seconds later:

Parent:

"No, that's not the right vocabulary."

The child restarts.

Then:

Parent:

"Use a better sentence."

After several interruptions, many children stop focusing on communicating.

Instead, they begin worrying about avoiding mistakes.

This creates anxiety instead of confidence.

Confidence Is Just as Important as Accuracy

Think about learning to ride a bicycle.

If someone stopped you every few seconds to point out every mistake, you would probably become nervous and lose confidence.

Speaking works in a similar way.

Children improve most when they are encouraged to finish expressing their ideas first.

Corrections are most effective after they have completed their response.

A Better Way to Practise Oral at Home

Instead of interrupting, try this simple three-step approach.

Step 1: Listen Without Interrupting

Allow your child to finish speaking completely.

Even if there are mistakes, resist the urge to stop them.

Your child is practising communication—not just pronunciation.

Step 2: Praise Something First

Before giving suggestions, acknowledge something positive.

For example:

  • "I like how clearly you explained your opinion."

  • "That was a good example."

  • "You spoke more confidently today."

Positive reinforcement encourages children to keep trying.

Step 3: Correct Only One or Two Things

Instead of correcting everything, choose the most important point.

Perhaps today you focus on:

  • pronunciation

Tomorrow:

  • vocabulary

The next day:

  • sentence organisation

Children learn far more effectively when they are not overwhelmed.

What Parents Should Correct Immediately

Some mistakes are worth correcting straight away.

These include:

  • Misunderstanding the question

  • Major pronunciation errors that change meaning

  • Incorrect facts in the response

  • Very unclear sentence structures

These issues can affect communication and should be addressed promptly—but still in a calm and encouraging way.

What Can Wait Until the End?

Other mistakes can be discussed after the child finishes speaking.

For example:

  • Minor grammar mistakes

  • Repeated vocabulary

  • Small pronunciation slips

  • Better word choices

  • Stronger examples

This allows children to maintain the flow of conversation.

Ask More Questions Instead of Giving More Corrections

Rather than saying:

"That's wrong."

Try asking:

  • Why do you think that?

  • Can you tell me more?

  • What happened next?

  • Can you give an example?

  • How would you solve that problem?

These follow-up questions encourage children to think more deeply and develop stronger speaking skills.

Remember: Oral Is a Conversation

The PSLE Oral Examination is designed to assess communication.

Good communication isn't about memorising perfect sentences.

It's about expressing ideas naturally.

Encourage your child to:

  • speak clearly

  • explain opinions

  • support ideas with examples

  • enjoy the conversation

The more relaxed they feel, the more naturally they will speak.
