Why Your Child Knows Science Concepts But Still Loses Marks in PSLE OEQs (And How to Fix It Before Exams)

As the PSLE Science Written Paper (29 September 2026) approaches, one issue comes up repeatedly in conversations with Singaporean parents:

"My child revizes the textbook daily, remembers every concept, and passes Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) easily. Yet, whenever the exam results return, Section B Open-Ended Questions (OEQs) are full of half-marks and zero-marks deduction!"

If this sounds familiar, your child does not have a concept problem—they have a answering structure problem.

The MOE PSLE Science marking scheme does not reward memorised textbook paragraphs. Examiners award marks strictly based on Process Skills, Keywords, and Logical Cause-and-Effect Sequences.

1. The "Too Vague" Trap: Missing Science Keywords

In Section B, generic everyday English is the quickest way to lose marks. The exam board requires specific scientific terminology (Keyphrases) to verify that a student truly grasps the underlying mechanism.


Real PSLE Science Example: Heat & State Changes

  • Question: Explain why water droplets formed on the outer surface of the cold glass of juice.

  • The Student's Common Answer (0 or 0.5 Marks):

    "Because the glass was cold and water came out from the ice inside and turned into droplets."

  • Why it lost marks: Missing heat transfer concepts, incorrect origin of moisture, and missing key phrases like "warmer water vapour" and "condensed".

  • The AL1 Standard Answer (2 Marks):

    "The warmer water vapour in the surrounding air gained coldness / lost heat to the cooler outer surface of the glass, and condensed into water droplets."

Notice the difference? The second answer follows a structured logic chain that leaves zero room for marker discretion.


2. The 3-Step "Cause-and-Effect" Answering Template

Observation: Identify the change shown in the diagram or experiment.

Scientific Concept: State the core principle (e.g., Heat Loss, Expansion, Closed Circuit, Photosynthesis Rate).

Direct Result: Connect the concept directly back to the question's scenario.

When students apply this framework, their answers naturally transform from unstructured thoughts into precise, full-mark responses.


3. High-Weightage Topics to Focus on This Month

If your child is revising for upcoming assessments or PSLE, prioritize these upper-block topics that carry the highest OEQ weightage:

  • Systems: Electrical Circuits (Series vs Parallel, Open vs Closed circuits) and Plant/Human Transport Systems.

  • Cycles: Matter and Water Cycle (Evaporation vs Condensation triggers).

  • Interactions: Forces (Frictional, Gravitational, Elastic Spring Force) and Magnetic Properties.

  • Energy: Photosynthesis, Respiration, and Energy Conversions.
